For the Inexperienced: Learn English
December 27, 2009
Formally, the United States has no official language. However, to be involved in many facilities speaking English fluently is mandatory in most states. This includes schools both public and private, universities, jobs, and also integration in social life. Learning English, a phonetic language, can be difficult at times, though not exceedingly. There are many ways to learn it both in formal and informal environments. Throughout everyday life it will be significant to learn English; the whole country speaks it.
To even undergo an education whether at a young or older age, it is necessary to learn English. Even if there are a few in California that teach in Spanish, public schools throughout the country exclusively teach in English. This is the same for universities, and any group outside the schooling setting.
People who are bilingual are more poised to obtain higher paying and ranked jobs. Because of English being the expected native language, those don’t speak it and want to learn it will automatically be bilingual, a significant plus. There is a wide range of options available to those who are bilingual. This includes working to translate text, teaching, and more. Bilinguals also make better impressions for job interviews, and with occupations that require contact with clients.
It is fairly easy to begin to learn English. There are programs both online and organizations willing to assist you. Online programs offer live encouragement, a detailed and premeditated course designed to support where many people often struggle. There is a wide variety to choose from, some even being free.
Offline, you may seek help learning English from communities for people who don’t speak English and help each other. There are extra classes to learn English for adults and children. These not only include textbook work, but ventures out into classic English-speaking places like restaurants and bars. Books, when not speaking, are the best way to come across new words.
The best way to learn English overall is to begin speaking it persistently. Reading is not enough to effectively learn it. Integrating at strictly English-only places rapidly speeds up the process. People who use English in regular activity are those who are frequently the quickest to learn it. This allows the speaker to gain a casual comfort when speaking.
English, although rewarding, can be a difficult language to learn. It is phonetic, but just like any other language has its tricky points. It requires a great amount of dedication to become proficient in both the reading and writing aspects. Writing in English takes just as much practice as speaking. The Internet is full of examples and syllabuses to use.
English is a growing language around the world. People in many foreign countries already speak, and write it. In the United States, being able to speak English is a must. Unless extremely well suited with connections, most are unable to obtain a decent education or job in America without an understanding of English. Learning English is also beneficial to those around you because communication just becomes easier.
Straying away from the traditional English class, tools such as the online English lessons are highly useful for beginners. While learning to speak English, beginners can learn to speak English in business settings by taking the business online English course.
Learn to Speak Italian With This 5 Step Guide
December 27, 2009
Whether it be an upcoming vacation, a desire to live in Italy, wanting to meet and converse with new people, or simply wanting to try something new, learning Italian is something that interests lots of people.
Fortunately, due to the demand for learning the language, there are plenty of resources available to help you do so. If you really want to do it, then the only thing holding you back is yourself.
So, what is the best way to get started? And what steps do you need to take? Well, significant progress will be made in a matter of weeks if these steps are followed…
1. There is no better place to start than a school that teaches Italian. The key to learning Italian begins with human interaction, which makes studying on your own unadvisable. Having a teacher explain to you about basic grammar, and having them there to correct your pronunciation errors, will stop you adopting bad habits early on which may be difficult to shake off later on.
2. Register at online Italian communities, or add Italian people to your instant messenger or social networking friend lists. The rapid development of the Internet means that we now live in a world you can communicate with people on the other side of the world on the same level as if they were sitting next you, and that is something that you should take advantage. You’ll be surprised at just how many people will be willing to chat to you and help you learn, especially if they have, or are currently, learning a language themselves.
3. Listening to music with Italian lyrics can be both rewarding and entertaining, and singing or reciting the lyrics will improve your pronunciation, grammar, and syntax. Again, the Internet is your friend here, as you can access a whole range of music online for free, and easily find the accompanying lyrics. If you’re not sure where to start, then ask the Italian friends that you made in step 2 for some recommendations.
4. Read articles in Italian. Whatever articles you like to read in English, whether it they be news, sport or entertainment, try reading the equivalent in Italian. All sorts of articles can be read for free online, so there’s not even any need to go out and but Italian newspapers or magazines. First read through and try to get a general idea of an article is about, then look up some of the words in a dictionary to try a give you a clearer idea, and then, finally, ask an Italian friend or your teacher to explain to you what it says, and see how close your understanding of it was.
5. If the opportunity is available, take a trip to Italy, as there is no substitute for total immersion into the Italian culture and language. Ideally, you will want to stay with an Italian family, maybe you could offer to do a temporary accommodation swap with one of your newly found Italian friends. It may take a little bit of saving up on your behalf but it is where you will make the most progress and consolidate yourself as an Italian language speaker.
…and that’s it! 5 clear steps are all that separate you from being able to speak Italian.

Safety Assessment of Sugar Substitutes
December 26, 2009
There have been extensive research on low calories sugar substitutes followed by meticulous inspections and law enforcements by official authorities in food industry. This is mainly due to achieving safety measures of sweetener content products rather than taste desirability and quality. Any low-calorie sweetener present in food products is legally obligated to be stated in ingredients on the packages.
Analysis of the acceptable daily intake i.e. ADI must be carried out within adequate parameter before being legally permitted to process and manufacture. It is specified as milligrams per kg of body weight that can be safely followed for daily consumption. The acceptable daily intake of each sweetener is evaluated cautiously to the extent that it is dramatically less than the safe portion for animals (resulting from laboratory animal experiments).
Basically the Food and Drug Administration is in charge of controlling the acceptable daily intake in the US while international authorization of the ADI is in association with distinguished organizations including the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of the United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO).
According to the results of many scientific experiments, commonly used sugar substitutes do not have any connection with risk of cancer. The following outlines the safety aspects studied on certain low-calorie sweeteners:
Saccharin
In 1977, using saccharin was forbidden in Canada as a result of some studies carried out in laboratory on experimental rats; increasing risk of bladder cancers caused by saccharin precipitation. In the USA the manufacturers were legally obligated to label a warning (that saccharin may develop the risk of cancer in laboratory animal) on the packages of the Saccharin- content products.
However according to a thorough study by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences that ruled out the possibility of cancer induced by saccharin with deep analysis of the fact that cancer developing system in rats is quite different from human mechanisms since the major evaluation was concerned with rats metabolism of sodium after saccharin ingestion and this was considered as an improper theory when animals fed with different sodium salts like sodium citrate; the same symptoms of cancer was diagnosed.
Aspartame
Results of preliminary research suggested that aspartame might be carcinogenic to rats. Subsequently, consumption of this sweetener was banned in the US by the Food and Drug Administration.
However after hypothesis was denied resulting from several researches implemented by international experts concluding that aspartame has no cancer-inducing factor and it is safe to be consumed by human and was formally allowed to be used by authorized organization including the FDA and the WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives.
During ingestion aspartame is chemically decomposed into smaller components such as aspartic acid and phenylalanine. The latter may be harmful to those suffering phenylketonuria; a genetic disease with insufficient hepatic enzyme (phenylalanine hydroxylase which is able to metabolize phenylalanine) that can lead to depositing phenylalanine and ultimately turning into phenylketone which is detectable in urine discharge. Thus it is required to be clearly specified on labels that ‘should not be used by phenylketonuria patients, contains phenylalanine’. This specification is a legal obligation in some countries like in the United Kingdom.

Launching Day Care Activities For Different Age Groups
December 25, 2009
Customers avail day care services if they know that the day care activities being implemented are suitable to child’s development. Most parents want someone to not only look after their children, but at the same time having fun and learning. Initiation of stimulating day care activities to a child will not only help them physically, but also mentally, and emotionally.
Day care programs should be modified depending on the age of the child. Infants and young toddlers will require more basic, gentle play, while older children will need more challenging activities. In dealing with a wide range of children, you must come up with day care activity that will meet all of their needs. It is possible with a little creativity and patience.
Infants and toddlers are hungry for good day care activities as much as older children do. Younger infants need plenty of floor time to help them in developing muscle strength and mobility. They will also love playing with bright colored rattles and soft toys. Older infants may enjoy pull toys, riding toys, large blocks, and stacking toys. Music, singing, and games such as peek-a-boo are very popular at this age.
Older toddlers needs day care activities that will help them discover new skills and concepts as puzzles, building blocks, arts and crafts, and outdoor play are important at this age. Dress up and memory games would be a fun day care activity. This age group are enhancing their mental and socialization skills. Older toddlers like to help adults, so with close and careful supervision, they can be encouraged to play with and help the younger babies.
Pre-schoolers need books in any day care programs, as these materials are crucial at this age. Read them stories as often as possible, keep plenty of colorful pictures in books and encourage these young ones to create their own stories to go with the pictures.
Day care activities should be scheduled if you are dealing with different age groups. For instance, you could have the preschool activity while infants enjoy their naptime, and vice versa. The schedules should be flexible yet, most children are not always cooperative with your plans. Make sure that you have at least one adult for each age group if you are combining and dealing with a large number of age groups for day care activities.
Outdoor play is an important activity for all age groups, even for infants. Older children prefer games such as baseball, tag, or hide and seek while most children of any age group love to swing, slide, and play in the grass. Babies may simply enjoy the sunlight, as they need it for their growing bones.
When you plan carefully, you can easily find the appropriate day care activities for any age group you are working with. One key is to listen to the children, as they know what they want. If they enjoy certain day care activities, try to find other similar things to do or if not, look for alternatives. Even the most well intended day care activities will be worthless if you can’t make the children cooperate with you.

Study Tips For Students of All Ages
December 25, 2009
With school started back up for the season for basically all education levels by now many of us have begun to think about all of the studying we or our children will have to do in the up coming months. But how do we or our children get the most from our studying so that it is not time spent on a useless activity. Anybody can sit down and read a textbook or notes but not everybody ahs the ability to retain that information as well as they may like to and need to in order to be successful in their education. What some people don’t realize is that the smallest interruption or the most distant distraction can seriously affect study time. There are a number of ways though that you or your child can make the most out of their study time and really make there time spent work for them.
Studying should always be done in a quiet area that will stay quiet throughout the length of the allotted study time. Although some individuals feel that they study better with background noise in many cases this is hardly the way that it is as the music is a distraction if not a conscious distraction then a sub-conscious one. Understandably it can be difficult to keep a quiet area open to one member of a large household for any length of time but if it is conceivable you could make it a quiet time for everyone. For those that do not have to study it would be a perfect time for reading a book or the newspaper. If it is not possible to have complete silence though studying should at least be done in a quiet room where the door can be closed. After switching to studying in quieter rooms you will soon see the difference in the outcome.
Studying on an empty stomach can also result in wasted time. When we are hungry our minds tend to wander from other things to our feelings of hunger which can distract studying and result in not being able to retain what we are reading. Even if you are studying before dinner that will soon be finished it is a good idea to have a small, healthy snack so as to take your mind of your stomach. Many people are amazed at how much not studying on an empty stomach improves their retention of the information.
Finally, one of the most important things to do when you’re studying to help yourself is take regular breaks, even if only for five minutes to stretch or get a drink. The reason this helps so much is because monotony tends to make our minds wander away from the task at hand which is exactly what you do not want to do when studying important information.
We all want to be successful in our education pursuits but with life’s many different aspects we can get caught up in distractions easily and often. Follow a few simple rules and you will be able to make the most from your study time.

A Feel Good Start Off For a Day Care
December 24, 2009
One dilemma of full-time working parents is, “Who will take care of their child?” A much bigger problem for them is if they do not have someone as a guardian, maybe a relative or a friend, to keep an eye on their little angels. Starting a day care center will not only earn you a lot of money because of the increase in demand, but also you will be able to help these parents overcome their dilemma.
Sometimes, parents worry if the day care program is suitable for their child and their qualifications. So before launching one, you have to review the day care center protocols, the programs you should offer, and how to deal with certain situations. Here are some pointers to help you go through into starting a day care.
You should consider the location of your day care center. It should not be situated in stressful places such as near traffic, noisy establishments, dangerous construction buildings, or in crowded area. It is also acceptable to put up a day care in your house. Your day care should also be suitable for the child’s learning experience. By doing so, your day care workers must be competent in handling the children, in using the learning materials, and in implementing the programs. In that case, your day care programs must have an edge in terms of development in child’s communication and personal skills, for them to be prepared for a much higher learning.
You should check the health and safety provision of your day care. You must be guided by the rules and regulations to ensure the safety of every child. Always ensure child friendly facilities are available instead of hazardous objects like the pointed ones. You should also avoid using toys that are high in chemical properties that can jeopardize the health of the child. Fire extinguishers and fire exit should be available in case a fire occurred.
You should ask yourself about the cost of your day care services. Will the parents be able to avail your day care service, considering their work salary and other expenditures? The majority should be able to budget in availing your day care. Of course they want a day care that will not burn their wallets and at the same time will not be deprived of the quality of services.
You should respect the child’s feelings towards your day care program. The parents may always have the final decision on matters, but listening to the child will help in determining whether your day care is a success or not since most of them know what they really want. If their needs and wants are not met, they would deny what is being provided. In a couple of days in your day care, the child must be seen with some improvements because if not, it means they don’t like your services.
With this kind of business, the parents are at ease that their child will be guarded and taken care of by the people like you who are interested in child care. You will be able to provide not only physical, but emotional, social, and intellectual needs as well for a developing child.

Review of Dragon Genetics
December 22, 2009
Piles and piles of research show that students learn better when they are fully and actively engaged in what they are learning, rather than attempting to passively absorb information. That is why good teachers in all subjects and at all levels find ways to get students fully involved. In science classes, one of the most important tools to achieve this goal is hands-on lab work.
Unfortunately, some topics don’t lend themselves very well to classroom experimentation. Genetics is a good example. Most studies of genetics require breeding large numbers of organisms through several generations. Some teachers manage to do fruit fly, bacteria, or Arabadopisis (a species of quick growing mustard plant) breeding experiments, but the logistics are daunting. Fortunately, there are alternatives. The very best alternative that I am aware of is Dragon Genetics.
Dragon Genetics is a free, downloadable program made by Pedogicica. As the name suggests, it allows users to explore the genetics of dragons in great depth. By happy coincidence, dragons have many genetic parallels with more familiar organisms, including humans.
Dragon Genetics is admirably clear and thorough. It starts out at the very beginning, and it goes all the way through the topics covered in AP Biology. From the beginning, it explicitly links the principles of genetics with the physical structure of chromosomes, rather than following the historical path of first discussing phenotypes and patterns of inheritance and only later connecting those facts to the physical structure of DNA.
Dragon Genetics teaches about monohybrids, dihybrids, mutations, and x-linked traits, among other topics. It does not discuss epigenetics, mitochondrial inheritance, or other similarly advanced subjects.
One of the characteristics that make Dragon Genetics effective is its sense of whimsy. The graphics are not cutting-edge, but the cartoon dragons are appealing and it is fun to figure out how to breed fire-breathing animals. At least as important is the structure of Dragon Genetics. The student must actively engage with the program, and do so successfully before being allowed to move on. In essence, the student learns about genetics by performing “experiments” and interpreting the results. Carefully structured questions guide the student through the process of interpreting “experimental” data. Of course the experiments are just computer models, with pre-determined results, but they are very good models and they allow for a genuine process of inquiry to take place.
As a tutor, I have used Dragon Genetics as an independent-study tool with considerable success. Because time is often quite limited when I’m helping students prepare for exams such as the Living Environment Regents, the SAT subject test in biology, and AP Biology, I will have students use Dragon Genetics to review genetics and related topics such as meiosis on their own, thereby buying more time to spend on everything else. In my experience, students who have completed Dragon Genetics almost always demonstrate a very good understanding of the material covered.
The program could also be used in a classroom context, as long as sufficient computers are available. Dragon Genetics is broken down into eight core lessons and four optional lessons. Each of the core lessons are designed to take about 45-50 minutes, so they will fit into most class periods. The optional lessons are shorter.
As a tutor who needs to get “results”, in the form of higher test scores, I appreciate the way that Dragon Genetics teaches content. As a teacher who genuinely loves science and cares about teaching logical thinking skills and the thought processes that underlie all science, I am enthusiastic about the way that Dragon Genetics teaches critical thinking and scientific method.

The Benefits of Learning American Sign Language
December 22, 2009
American Sign Language (ASL) is the 3rd most used language throughout the United States. Learning sign language can provide numerous benefits. Some of these benefits include being able to converse with a person who is deaf or hard-of-hearing. Have you ever meet a deaf person before? If not, the first time you do meet one, just imagine the expression on his or her face when you sign, “Hello”. Sign language can be learned for people who scuba dive. Having the ability to communicate underwater is priceless. Imagine you and your friend adventuring into a underwater cave. You spot something really cool. You get your friend’s attention, then with the use of sign language, you are able to covey this “important” message. I am not sure if you have ever tried writing a note underwater, but I can only imagine what the paper would do.
Not only is it cool to be able to converse underwater and converse with deaf people, but you can also make interpreting into a career. Being able to sign gives you an advantage that most people do not have. How many people really know how to sign? My guess is less than 1% of all people know sign language fluently. If you decide to make sign language interpreting a career for you, you would have to enroll in an Interpreter Training Program to help you achieve your goal. While you are deciding to make interpreting a career choice, you can begin learning sign language fluently online, or at a local college. There are several online programs that will give you an upper-hand while learning sign language. You want a program that will provide all of the essential ingredients of ASL. Some of these components include ASL grammar, facial expressions, fingerspelling, numbers, sentence structure, synonyms and linguistics.
Another benefit of learning American Sign Language is the ability to learn about another culture. In the United States alone, there are a plethora of cultures. Deaf culture is one which very few people are familiar with. Have you ever wondered how a deaf person answers the phone? How do deaf individuals know when there is a knock at the door? How do they wake up in the morning for work? Has it ever occurred to you how a deaf person communicates with those who are hearing? For the most part, learning another language also requires you to learn about the culture as well. Deaf culture has a rich heritage, and it reflects tremendous pride. Deaf people function the same way a hearing person would, except with some accommodations made for their inability to hear. Some of these accommodations might include a specialized door knocker, which triggers a flashing light that alerts the deaf person. The same concept might be used to warn of an incoming telephone call. How does a deaf individual “talk” on the phone if they can’t hear? Well, technology has provided some much needed accommodations that make the lives of deaf citizens much easier compared to what was available in years past. Before the advent of the TTY, deaf people had to drive to the pizzeria to place the food order, then return to the vehicle and wait until the pizza is ready, and then drive home. Thankfully, those inconveniences are a thing of the past.
Now, the newest technical device is a videophone, so even the TTY/TDD is being used less every day. With the use of a videophone, deaf individuals can place telephone calls to anyone by using this new technology. A deaf person merely has to call the relay center where a hearing person is visible to both parties via a television screen. Instead of typing like the TTY/TDD technology requires, the two will communicate only in sign language. The deaf person will provide the interpreter with a telephone number to call. The interpreter places the call to the hearing party. The conversation is then signed to the deaf individual. The interpreter simply signs over the TV screen to the deaf person, and speaks to the hearing person through a headset. Conversations between deaf and hearing are now being done this way all around the world.
Here, I have only listed a few reasons why learning sign language is important. In life, there are so many more reasons why learning this skill is so important; perhaps you have a deaf parent, child, or sibling. Maybe your co-worker is deaf, or perhaps you work at a job where you encounter many deaf customers. Regardless of why you are interested in sign language, there remains no doubt that you can benefit tremendously from knowing this rich and vast language.

How the United States Capitol Cupola Became a Symbol of Democracy
December 22, 2009
One of the most famous landmarks of the United States is the United States Capitol with the cupola or dome that graces its roofline. The Capitol dome, with its pure white sandstone is radiant—a symbol of democracy and strength. A breathtaking site when illuminated at night it is a fitting finale for the building it crowns. Located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, it houses the Senate and House chambers of the legislative branch. It is among the most symbolic and architecturally impressive buildings of our Nation.
The original cupola design began with a Capitol design contest operated by Thomas Jefferson who was Secretary of State under President George Washington. The award $500.00 and a city lot to whomever produced the winning plan. 17 plans were submitted, none of which were approved. Then in the fall a letter arrived from a Dr. William Thornton, requesting an opportunity to submit a plan which the Commissioners granted. The building was characterized by a Central dome (cupola).
The dome was to be placed over the rotunda and was a two dome structure. The interior dome rose 96 feet above the rotunda floor and was built of stone; the exterior was a wooden dome with a copper roof and rose 140 feet. At the top of the dome was a wide oculus to illuminate the rotunda floor. Thomas Jefferson called it, “the first temple dedicated to the sovereignty of the people.”
As the United States grew and more states joined the Union the Capitol needed to be expanded. Extensions were built to the North and South. With these additions, the original dome was not aesthetically pleasing. To achieve balance the size of the cupola needed to be in proportion to the length of unbroken roof line. The old cupola was a fire hazard as it was made of timber frame. For these reasons, a new fireproof dome was considered necessary. This was a most ambitious undertaking in the history of American architecture.
The wooden dome was removed in the fall of 1856. The new dome was three times the height of the original dome and built out of cast iron with columns, pilasters, scores of windows and crowned with a statue. A large painting of the Apotheosis of Washington was painted on a shell and the canopy is suspended between the inner and outer dome and is visible through the oculus at the top of the inner dome. Apotheosis is a Greek word that means ‘to raise to a god like stature.’
Domes with their circular shape have been called the perfect architectural shape, the circle being a symbol of the universe. In religious architecture domes proclaim the glory of God. The oculus or eye of the dome is considered the gateway of the Sun. From this gateway at the Top of the Dome rises the World Axis, the link between heaven and earth.
The dome was placed above the Rotunda, which is the circular room located on the second floor in the center of the Capitol. It is this room that has served as the ceremonial Center of the United States Capitol and known as the symbolic and physical heart of the U.S. Capitol.
As the United States grew it is clear that state governments saw the dome of the United States Capitol building as the American architectural icon of choice. Many states chose to emulate the structure to varying degrees in the construction of their own state capitols by incorporating a central dome or cupola in their designs.
The dome has gained a dominant presence in America’s skylines, a symbol of democracy and of aspiration to enable all citizens to live lives of dignity and freedom.
