College Students and Reputations
March 22, 2009
Hollywood has so drastically changed the real image of college students that many employers are afraid to hire a student in certain areas of our nation. The idea that student’s party, drinks, and never studies but is a bunch of spoiled children away from home is a very bad image to overcome. The young do know how to have a good time just like anyone else but that does not mean that they are irresponsible in college. Many young people have worked very hard to get into college and often work even harder to maintain their status at college.
What many people should consider is that most colleges will not keep anyone who does not keep a good grade point average, parties instead of studies, and shows up to class late or not at all. The colleges of today are very strict actually some students have remarked that going to college is tougher than when they were at home. Many young people feel that the college expects more from them than the high school that they attended. The student not only has to study, show up in class, but many need to work afterwards to help support themselves. It is not easy being a college student it takes a lot of hard work and plenty of patience.
Hollywood makes going to college seem like it is all fun and games. They show the Spring Break like it is just one big party that goes on the whole college year. The Hollywood moguls take great effort to make everyone think that our young people of today go to college to have fun and get away from their parents. The truth is that professors and college deans are not baby sitters nor do they run around checking out what your student is doing. Each student has to be responsible for them and if they do not meet the standards they are kicked out of school. Colleges has so many responsible people who are in school to make a good life for themselves that study hard and mind the rules that they do not have to tolerate the unruly.
The problem faced with colleges today stems mostly from the behavior of athletes. The athletes are in a prime position because of their ability to play games to get by with more things than the average student. The colleges still make requirements of their athletes and if they do not comply they can be heavily fined and even yes lose their place on the team or be kicked out of school. Everyone who goes to college is expected to be a very responsible adult and in most cases they most certainly are not the product that Hollywood would like us all to believe.
As you grow old, you’ll realize that life is all about yourself and society doesn’t care what you look like or what you do. No one cares that you drive an Escalade or a Jaguar. No one cares that you live in a 8,000 square foot home. In the end, it’s all about being respectful and respecting the ones around you.

The Best Jobs Today Require a Graduate Degree: Don’t Let These Common Myths Stop You From Getting Yours!
March 21, 2009
Millions of Americans are facing lay-offs or have already lost their job. How can you secure your future? Many employers now require a graduate degree, not just an undergrad degree. In difficult times, more people consider going to graduate school so they can land a stable, lucrative job. Unfortunately, many don’t move forward because they believe one of the four following myths.
Myth #1 – It’s too expensive and I can’t afford it.
Yes, the cost of education has increased along with everything else in our world. Fortunately, there are many opportunities to get others to pay for your graduate studies so you can earn your degree with minimal personal expense or debt.
• Check with your current employer. Many offer educational benefits.
• Work for the college or university you want to attend. We’re not talking about minimum wage or work-study jobs. Get a job in admissions, developments, human resources or other institutional offices and you can earn a salary and benefits that almost always include full or partial tuition coverage.
• Apply for scholarships and fellowship funding. There is more available for grad students than undergrads and it isn’t just the educational institutions that offer them. Look into the following options:
* The U.S. Department of Education
* Civic organizations like your local Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club, Elk’s Club, Masons, etc.
* Religious organizations
As tuition costs rise, so does funding for scholarships and far more financial help is available than you think. By combining the resources above, you can end up with a very large amount of money. Some of these options come with ‘strings attached’ – a method of service or commitment to continuing to work for a period of time after graduation. Fulfilling those obligations will be well worth it.
Myth #2 – I’m too old to go back to school.
Statistics show that, in many institutions, the average graduate student is in his or her mid to late thirties. There is no disadvantage or stigma for going back as an older student. In fact, institutions welcome older students with work and life experience because of the value they add to the discipline being studied and discussions in the classroom. Online, part-time, evening and weekend programs are proliferating in response to the growing number of older students returning to school.
Myth #3 – My undergraduate academic record isn’t good enough and I won’t get accepted.
Admissions committees don’t just look at grades. They look at everything in your application including letters of recommendation, essays, the type of courses you took, internships and work and life experience. Admissions directors are human beings who are looking for reasons to get you in, not reasons to keep you out. The older and further away you are from your college degree, the less important your previous grades will be.
If you still feel your academic record is lacking, take one or two grad courses and get an A. It shows you’re serious about your education and demonstrating what you’re capable of doing. Then you can say in your application essay, ‘While my undergrad record is not strong, this is an example of the kind of work I do now.’ It doesn’t matter if your recent courses are at a community college or lesser known university; it’s the initiative that shines.
Myth #4 - It isn’t worth going unless I get into a top-ranked school or program.
There are tons of examples of people who went to all the top schools yet have failed dismally. Employers know this and when it comes right down to it, they value who you are, what you can bring to the table and the degree itself; not where you attended school. Getting your graduate degree from any institution demonstrates to employers that you have what it really takes to succeed – persistence and determination.
Now that you’re over these myths, what’s holding you back? Get out there and start on your way to achieving your dreams!
Don Martin did it and so can you. He went from nothing to a Ph.D. and a prestigious career in higher education. Check out his book, Road Map for Graduate Study and visit his website, http://www.gradschoolroadmap.com for even more invaluable advice about getting into and succeeding in grad school.
If Only You Knew the Chinese Language
March 21, 2009
You feel like kicking yourself in the butt for not knowing the Chinese language. For a long period of time you had planned to learn both this language and the written script. If you had then you would not have faced the problem you are facing now. For a long time you have been searching the net about the latest drivers for a particular hardware but have been unsuccessful. One of your friends told you to forget that idea and recommended that you go in for some new hardware that will help you to conduct your work better and that will also cost you less money. After spending some time for the same on auction sites and not finding it, you decide to use the search engine and are immediately provided with a number of results.
This is the start of your woe story. Though there are a number of sites that have that particular hardware, all of them are in the Chinese language and since you do not have any knowledge about the same, you cannot figure out what to do. You can see the prices in American Dollars and they are reasonable but what about information of the product and there is the form you have to fill up in order to process your order. You just cannot make heads or tails of what is what on the online form. Then there is the place where you have to submit your credit card details. This you could understand because of the `visa’ and other credit card logos.
You make some rough guesses and fill out the form in the standard procedure (name, address, quantity, card number etc.), but each time you click on the `submit’ button, you see that the form is being refreshed. This is a pain and you are now getting irritated after repeating the procedure a couple of times. You need that hardware urgently and hence your repeated attempts. If only you had known the Chinese language and its translation, you would have observed that you are clicking on the `form reset’ button, instead of the `submit’ button. Generally the `submit’ button is on the left and the `form reset’ button on the right.
Chances are that the person who designed the web site was using an English language program to design the web page and he or she too had made a mistake in the layout of the buttons. He or she might be excused for those who know the Chinese language will know what the different buttons mean. The bottom line is that you have missed out on a golden opportunity that could have changed the way you work. You have nobody else to blame for this quandary you are in today. If you had bothered to learn translation of the Chinese language you might have been able to fill up the online form and get the hardware your business so badly needs. It is high time that you too started thinking very seriously.

Five Great Tips to Help You Learn Spanish
March 21, 2009
If you’re determined to learn Spanish, then before you start, there are some useful and important things you need to know before you begin. Following these five tips for learning Spanish and success will not only help you through the process, but make it fun as well.
1. Setting up a reasonable goal first is an important factor when you start to study Spanish online. The reason why this is important is because you need to organize your time, and have a good idea of what level you want to reach and how much time you have to reach it. If you don’t set these goals from the start, then you run the risk of not really learning anything at all, and worst of all, getting frustrated.
2. Another important consideration for learning Spanish is where you are actually studying. It’s highly critical that you decide on which activities you do where. For example, you may be using your home computer to do some of the work, but do not forget that your car stereo and television with a DVD player are some of your best assets, because these things can help you reinforce what it is you’re learning from your online work. If you make sure that you study the correct way, then you should not have any problems.
3. Sitting down and studying grammar for hours a day in order to learn Spanish is something that you do not have to do. All you really need to do is be consistent with how much you are studying, and make sure that you are actually using your new found language skills.
4. Instead of complicating your language study efforts by trying to memorize each and every word and living with a dictionary, which by the way is the single most popular way to loose interest really fast, try it this way: concentrate on always recognizing key words in a spoken conversation without translating every word and then attempt to catch the main idea of what is being said. In fact, if you take that dictionary and hide it for a bit, then you will find that you begin to understand larger concepts of a conversation or reading, which in the long run will make your language acquisition quicker.
5. Have you thought about where you might practice speaking? After all, it is like trying to get stronger. Once you start at the gym you should not stop. You build your muscles because you are using them constantly. Once you stop, they atrophy. It is the same with language learning. You must use the language. It’s not as difficult as you might think. What you need to do is find some people who you can practice with. One of the best places to do this in is a neighborhood store that is located in a Spanish speaking section of town, or for example, check with a local college for discussion groups which may exist filled with people who are in the same exact situation. It is also a great way to meet new friends.
So if you really want to learn Spanish, follow these tips to and you will find that learning the language, Spanish or any other, a breeze and most importantly a fun experience.
There are many methods and strategies to learn Spanish online, including programs such as Rocket Spanish and Rosetta Stone Spanish, however none of these can really work unless you employ certain language learning skills. Spanish Learning Review can help with this. Sign up for our free 5 day email course on language learning strategies for a vast variety of information.
Dress Codes at College
March 21, 2009
Many colleges do not require a dress code for their students but some of the Ivy League Universities do have certain insignia’s that the students are very proud to wear. Many of the Ivy League universities provide the students with their own numbers and jersey’s when they are athletes. Their students are often use to getting their own special jackets with the insignia that designates what University that they are attending. Most students wear their University’s dress wear when it comes to important events.
Students who attend colleges and universities all have the same thing in common when it comes to wearing certain types of clothes. The colleges do not require the student to wear anything special but it is just a common over all dress code that just about everyone in America wears today. Many college students like to wear the jacket of the school showing their colors and sometimes they wear sweaters, sweet shirts, and hats that all bare the school colors and logos. More commonly worn by most students are the traditional blue jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters. Many students wear gym shoes or loafers on their feet. Those students who attend college in the southern states may wear sandals or sneakers while the students from the northern states wear boots because of the cold weather.
When a young person attends college clothing is not always on the top of their list of things to buy because they need to save their money for food, books, and other important things needed while a student. That is why when holidays and birthday come around it is usually a good idea to give the student clothing as a gift. You should consider where they are attending school and this will give you a good idea what the student may need.
When you are thinking of giving a college student clothing consider if they are going to school in very cold weather or very warm climate. The students who are in school in colder weather usually need things like socks, hats, gloves, thermal underwear and perhaps even a warm coat. They can never get enough sweaters and blue jeans no matter where they attend school. Students who are going to college in much warmer climate probably can use things like sandals, swim suits, shorts and t-shirts. No matter where your favorite student attends school clothes is always a welcome gift.
When shopping for clothing for your upcoming school year, no matter what kind of dress code you have, always look for cheaper alternatives like resale shops, discount retailers and more. You’ll be surprised how much you can save when you shop at discount stores and you’ll also be amazed at what kind of name brands that is there. Why should you pay full price for name brand clothing when you can get all for a discount of up to 75% off.
Clothing is just one of the things that you’ll need for college. When it comes to money, always make sure you put tuition and books before fashion.

Colegio Luso Internacional Do Porto - CLIP - Philisophy – Artur Victoria Founder Principles
March 21, 2009
The primary commitment of the Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto is the preparation of students to be literate, competent, educated, skilled, informed citizens, appreciative of the arts, capable of critical thinking and problem solving, and able to function effectively within a complex, interdependent and pluralistic world.
The Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto is a k-12 school with the following goals:
1. To offer a student centered, thoroughly modern, academically challenging, and internationally focused program of studies
2. To provide foreign students with the opportunity to continue their education in Portugal in a sequential, comfortable fashion;
3. To offer students of Portuguese parents, who have attended schools in other countries, a proper process of school reintegration;
4. To offer Portuguese students the opportunity to acquire an international education that will prepare them for attendance at foreign universities, for careers in the world corporate arena, and for suitable positions in the post-1992 Europe.
Central to the Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto are seven basic principles:
1. Academic Excellence: the advancement of the highest academic standards through a stringent and fully integrated curriculum that stresses individual excellence and group achievement.
2. Learning how to learn: the various disciplines are developing at a such rate that makes an encyclopedic approach to education quite unviable. By focusing on how, to learn, our aim is to prepare students for a lifetime of learning and personal development;
3. Cooperative Learning: the instructional program of the Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto is based on the premise that students can and should learn from each other’s and that they must shoulder the greatest responsibility for their education.
4. Diversity and Crosss Cultural Education: the underlying concept of International Education is a learning process that positions the study of the diverse expressions of human life at the core of its program of studies.
5. Individual Needs and concerns: The program focuses on the needs and concerns of each individual student. The central programmatic focus in this regard is the Teacher Advisor Program coordinated by the Guidance Counselor.
6. Participatory Decision-making: The governance of the Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto is based on a democratic model for decision-making, as articulated in its Charter. The Colegio recognizes the preeminent role of parents, teachers, and students in the educational process.
7. The Arts: The arts are essential to a complete understanding of out nature as human beings and as members of cultural groups. In this regard the arts must be taught as independent disciplines and as integral parts of the entire program of studies.

Colegio Luso Internacional Do Porto – Clip – Program of Studies Prepared by Its Founder Dr. Arthur Victoria
March 21, 2009
Preparing this innovative educational program – in 1989 – the success case is actually shown. At the beginning the coordination between national curricula and international subjects was a preoccupation in order to get the official equivalence from the educational authorities
The program of studies of the Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto will follow an innovative curriculum designed to prepare students for the International Baccalaureate, or for a professional diploma in International Business Administration. The curriculum will emphasize communication and computing skills, critical thinking, research techniques, multicultural education, and an integrated approach to curriculum design …
Even though the greatest portion of class time is already allocated to specific disciplines, the
schedule gives students the opportunity to pursue learning in other areas. The elective program will offer courses in Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Social Anthropology, Organization Studies, Classical Languages, Computing Sciences, Individual Studies, Modern Foreign Languages (English, French, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Japanese), Research Projects,
and any course offered in the Professional Program.
In addition to, or in place of, the elective program students will be encouraged to undertake independent studies in various disciplines, under the guidance and supervision of a qualified teacher.
Since the philosophy of the Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto defines the student as a researcher, it is imperative that they become proficient in the processes, methodology and technology of research.
All students will, therefore, take a series of courses in Research Technology. This course will provide each student an extensive “hands-on” computer experience. Students will be expected to keyboard at 35 wpm, master a word-processing and database software. The teacher, working cooperatively with other subject matter teachers will develop theme materials pertinent to an integrated curriculum.
Organization of Classes
Classes will be heterogeneous in terms of students’ academic performance. Students may be assigned to learning groups for specific curriculum units according to the mastery of skills required.
Besides the outlined academic program, seniors (12th graders) will have a Community service period (serving as tutors to students in lower grades, volunteering their services to
community agencies, etc.).
During the senior year students must complete an extensive research project (Exhibition of Mastery), using at least two media (writing being compulsory). The completed project will then be, defended before a jury composed by faculty, administration and parents.
IB
Students who opt fop the International Baccalaureate Program will follow a course of studies designed in accordance with its strict specifications. Article 2 of the General Regulations states the following:
The examination for the Diploma requires candidate9. To offer six subjects, each norm is studied over a period of two years at least three and not more than four must be offered at Higher level (HL) and the others at Subsidiary level
(SL). Syllabuses at HL require of minimum of 240 hours teaching’s time; syllabuses at SL require a minimum of 150 hours teaching time. (One hour=60 minutes teaching time.)
The goal of the Colegio Luso Internacional do Porto will be to offer students a rigorous course of studies during the refrs preceding the 11th.
The curriculum is designed to allow students. the possibility of continuing their studies at a higher level or of entering the job market.

How to Organize Courses on Social Bioethics – an Artur Victoria Proposal
March 21, 2009
By way of introduction, for an organization to come to grips with the task of strategically implementing reform in integrity and ethics, its people need to be knowledgeable about a whole range of issues to enable them to clearly understand the motivations, requirements, their various roles in implementation and how to work together for the larger purpose.
So the topics identified as important to date, in roughly the right order I think, are as
follows:
1.
2. Introduction to Organizational Ethics and Integrity
3. Organizational Analysis
4. Awareness Raising, Education & Training
5. Codes of Ethics (Conduct, Practice, Behaviour)
6. Ethical Decision Making
7. Mechanisms for Ethics Advice and Support.
8. Risk Assessment Strategies
9. Information, Data Collection & Records
10. Professional Ethics:
II. Leading with Integrity
12. Corporate Social Responsibility:
13. Future Perspectives
Assumptions:
An organization has had little or no prior exposure to institutionalizing ethics and integrity into its culture or operations. Obviously, in most cases that many would have some limited exposure, while possibly not having any actual systems in place, and might therefore at least be aware of some of the issues.
If so, it might be reasonable to expect that these issues are possibly already being dealt with in some ways by a set of entrenched values (”good” or “bad”, written or unwritten) within their
organizations.
Approach:
This particular segment of any course(s) that is developed would be of assistance in any organization. This would be by way of enabling and empowering its people to appreciate the complexities and the wide range of possible sub-strategies involved in implementing an integrity regime (ethics strategy. It includes the main things that I can think ofthat would be part ofthe process and assumes that nothing at all has been done previously. In practice one hopes that there may be a somewhat better basis than that, in some places anyway.
Topics and Content
A proposed logical order of progression, which could be dealt with at different levels of complexity and details, depending upon the need and the audience. For example, if one had only a few hours available on this in a course, a broad-brush look at important issues in strategic implementation would be feasible, although probably not terribly useful to my mind, by covering all of the topics in an overview presentation/workshop. More likely the approach would be to break these topics down, to the extent possible given time constraints with any training course etc. also allows the various “modules” to be flexible, such that users could choose to select all of the topics or could cherry-pick only those which they specifically needed at any point in time.
Users may then come back for more later.
The content under each topic has the better web-based information sources.
That includes: Organizational Ethics, Corporate Governance and Business Ethics, Leadership and Team/Self Development and to a lesser extent Public Sector Management and various courses in Human Resource Management.
Readings & References
At this point I have only given a broad general reference list. This is because many, if not most, of the good books now available cover a number of the topics. Neither list supports to be complete, but they do cover many good general sources. At the later stage of final design and delivery, specific chapters and or journal articles and/or professional articles would be recommended on sub-topics, depending upon the specific needs and/or interests of
the course participants.
This might perhaps be in the form of a prepared book of readings appropriate for the specific audience. In places I have shown sources of some ideas, but most are not from single sources but an amalgam of content from wide ranging sources.
Introduction to Organizational Bioethics and Integrity
This would present a broad introduction to the challenges and the need to build a proper implementation strategy. It would present the meaning and focus of Organisational Ethics and Integrity in respect of the organisations themselves, the individuals who work in them and the societies in which they operate.
Some mention of theories would be included, such as the philosophical and moral foundations of ethics and integrity, values, organisational corporate responsibility, personal morality etc., to provide a foundation of knowledge. However, this would be kept to the minimum possible, consistent with providing an effective enough grounding upon which to build. The emphasis on Strategic Implementation would always be based upon a “best practice approach” – what actually works in practice.
Likely content would include:
Broad terminology and concepts:
How people focus on morally challenging dilemmas and make ethical decisions about their Actions Ethical theories: Consequentialist (teleology, egoism, utilitarianism etc.), ethical relativism, virtue ethics, moral development (Kohlberg et al).
Values and ethics
Ethical decision-making: EDM models, normative judgements, distributive justice, excusing conditions, mitigating circumstances etc.
Essential Issues in Organizational Bioethics
• Establishing the fundamental values of the organisation
• Defining broad principles which emanate from these values
• Developing standards which will guide employees in upholding these values and principles
• Establishing specific guidelines for employee behaviour
• Ensuring compliance: through rewards and sanctions
Reasons for the increasing global interest in Organisational Ethics
• Increased concern over corporate violations and scepticism about corporate rhetoric
• Growing public demand for corporate accountability
• Strengthened roles of various watchdog organisations
• Numerous Public Enquiries, Royal Commissions, Senate Enquiries etc……
• Leadership under fire in most sectors

What “best practice” organizations can do and are doing
• Going back to basics, revisiting mission statements, vision, values, principles (the “Why
are we here ?!” questions)
• Developing or enhancing Codes of Ethics I Practice I Conduct

• Reinforcing fraud and corruption prevention controls
• Governments are passing laws and more closely addressing public sector management
• Educationalists and academics are exploring and revisiting theories, concepts, actions,
outcomes etc., in ethics
• Universities and Business Schools are including Business Ethics in their study programs
Some current and emerging issues in Organizational Bioethics & Integrity
(Some of these are arguably outside our loop. but they are contextual to understanding the
complexities and inter-relatedness of global issues)
• International Corruption: strategies for dealing with this, in particular at the organizational
level.
• Conflicts of Interest in all its form as a major challenge in almost every quarter
• Integrity in international business and dealing with cross-cultural issues.
• National and international litigation; individual and class actions.
• Care Ethics: Caring for employees in difficult times - responsibilities towards employees,
customers, society at large and between employees.
• Global markets and globalization and the need for greater international and inter-cultural
awareness and sensitivity.
• Ethics and the Media: Reactions to the major transgressions: invasions of privacy, libel,
excessive investigatory actions, political influence.

engineering, and the demise of public health systems.
• Integrity in International Business: reactions to damaging corporate and political scandals,
to world political changes generally and combating global corruption.
• Environmental Ethics: Greater realization of the enormous damage being done in the nameof “progress”.
• Ecommerce, EGoverment: The dramatic changes, currently underway and accelerating,
brought about by the “Information Highway”. These changes are rendering our familiar
notions of national and international commerce, trade, the marketplace etc. completely outmoded and many traditional governance arrangements totally ineffective.
• Whistle blowing: how to facilitate it where necessary and how to protect the whistleblowers
• The protection of the environmental and the many organizational challenges emanating from this requirement.
Sources of the future broad societal challenges likely to affect organizations
• Changing economic conditions
• People or Profit
• Rapid technological change
• The end of privacy
• Changing social values
• Multicultural Societies
• Endemic unemployment I underemployment
• Development of an underclass
• The end of organizational loyalty
• Increasing ecological I environmental pressures
• Bioethics (genetics, pandemics, survival etc.)
• Population growth and massive shifts
• Workforce diversity
• Dominant corporate power and wealth
• Demise of the public sector
• Politics: national and international - demands for better leaders, with integrity
• “Global Ethics” (a better world)
The message her is how the individual organisation can take action to stay ahead of the game
as these impacts emerge.
What organizations and their leaders need to do
• Regularly revisit your “Credo”
• Instill Credo and values in every employee - reject employees who cannot comply
• Provide strong ethical leadership, especially CEO
• Stay ahead of community standards
• Strive for diversity in the makeup of your organization
• Clearly state your “Vision” and gain employee ownership of it
• Develop a Code of Ethics based on your Credo, Vision and Shared Values
• Establish an Ethics Committee which pre- considers new ventures, examines cases and
activities, to guide future actions
• Establish an Ethics “Hotline” to take suggestions and enquiries from stakeholders
• Balance concern for people and profit - based on wider social issues
• Educate before the need arises, not as a response to dilemmas
