Online Bachelor Degree Costs - Is A Degree Actually Worth The Cost? (A Case Study)

Obtaining a bachelor degree qualification can certainly be a positive step towards an enjoyable and successful career but it has significant educational costs that need to be considered. How does the investment in your education actually pay off in the long run financially? This article looks at how the numbers stack up.

Ok, to begin with we must look at what an online bachelor degree actually costs. The direct cost of education can range anywhere from $2000 to $30,000 a year at some high profile private schools. But for the purpose of this article we are going to use an average figure of $6,500 per year. We then need to add another $800 per year for textbooks, stationary and supplies which brings us to $7300 per year. Based on this, the total cost of a 4 year course the is $29,200. For the ease of understanding lets round that up to $30,000 just to keep it simple.

The direct cost of the education is not the main expense however. The highest online bachelor degree cost (which is not always considered) is the additional cost (or income loss) of the student not working full time while carrying out their bachelor degree program. By choosing to go to college or university to obtain a degree the student’s ability to get a start in his or her chosen career is delayed by a minimum of four years. So for this discussion I will increase the non degree income by 50% to account for this which equates to a weekly income of $922.

On this basis the degree holders earn on average an additional $186 per week or an annual increase of $9672. So without taking into account other factors such as taxation and inflation it would take 11 years and 4 months for the initial online bachelor degree cost to be covered by the increased earning potential it provides. Over the average working lifespan of 40 years the degree would have earned an additional $386,880. This is more than three times the additional cost!

So you can see from this, that it is clear that obtaining a degree certainly does pay off financially. However it is also important to remember that education has many other benefits that will enrich your life.

The Good Old Alkaline Battery

All of us know about the good old alkaline battery as guaranteed within the course of our lives is the use of these cells to power any number of devices in and around the house. The alkaline battery was first introduced in the early 60’s, as a solution to portability issues within commercial installations, but of course with the explosion of the portable market and carry all gadgets, these were then introduced to the consumer market in the truck loads and the revolution of energy started from there.

The capacity of the battery is quite standard fare, with 1.5 volts being the normal rating that you would get, but because of the denser energy storage within the cells, it can last up to 5 times longer than older zinc batteries. 1000mA is the normal current that can be provided by the alkaline battery, and that increases with size. Higher rated and larger alkaline batteries like the D and C cells, are much bigger and have much larger current storage. One thing you should note about the alkaline battery is that over time and misuse, there might be leakage issues.

This is pretty common and the leakage of the battery usually is the potassium hydroxide, which when coming into contact with the skin, can cause problems and irritations. What ever you do, do not mix battery types and recharge batteries not meant to be recharged – a well as storing them properly and keeping them out of the heat. What Do Homework Wars Have to Do With the Learning Curve?

I know many of you are aware of the four stages of learning. We usually refer to these stages as the learning curve. I’m going to talk about those stages of learning and relate them to the reading process and then homework.

The LEARNING CURVE

1. Unconscious Incompetence: The first stage is when you don’t know what you don’t know. Remember back when you first started school. You were probably excited about being able to learn how to read. I know I was because my older siblings were already reading. But I didn’t know what the alphabet was or that it even existed let alone that it had twenty-six letters.

2. Conscious Incompetence: The second stage is when you now know what you don’t know. This is when you learn that there is an alphabet and that the letters stood for sounds, and that you could actually combine letters to make additional sounds. You know that you need to learn the sounds of the letters and the sounds of the combined letters. You also know that you need to figure out how these letters combine to form words.

3. Conscious Competence: The third stage is when you now know it, but you have to concentrate to use what you know. This is the stage of reading where you have finally put letters together to make words, but you have to concentrate to sound them out. You are actually working at reading each word.

4. Unconscious Competence: you know it, and you can do it without thinking about it. This is the stage of reading where fluency takes over. You are able to automatically retrieve the words and become a fluent reader. Reading becomes second nature. It is easy.

Every time we learn a new task, we go through these steps. As parents, we don’t usually think about this relating to our jobs. When we start a new job or task we know there is what we refer to as a learning curve. We know that once we become more familiar with the new job or task it will become easier and easier. Eventually the task becomes second nature to us. That is what happened when we learned to read, or to ride a bike, or to make a meal. It is difficult at first but gradually we move from the unconscious incompetence to unconscious competence.

So, Why Am I Even Going On About This…and What Does It Have to Do With Homework Wars?

Think about it, what often happens is that we expect our kids to be able to get right to their homework assignments and complete them with ease. We also expect them to be able to read with ease, do writing assignments with ease, and do math assignments with ease. If we keep in mind this learning curve, the four stages of learning, we may end up being more patient and helpful to our kids and have a more pleasant homework time.

Keeping the learning curve (the 4 stages of learning) in mind, kids need to learn how to do homework, when to do their homework, and why they are doing it. When children understand there is a reason for doing something, that it is not just busy work, they are more apt to do it without complaint.

Aren’t we the same? When we don’t know how to do something, do we do it readily? If you are anything like me, you probably do the things that come easily first and put off the things you don’t know how to do very well.

If we haven’t consciously put an activity or chore into our schedule does it always get done on time? I can’t begin to think about the countless times I have been stressed because I’m up on deadline for a project because other things took me longer than I had expected. And, I think of myself as being pretty good at time management.

When we don’t understand why we need to do a task, especially one that is pointless in our opinion, do we do it quickly and well or do we procrastinate about doing it? Isn’t this familiar to you? And, if we see the value of doing something, don’t we give it a higher priority and pay a little more attention to it, and get it done in a timely fashion? I know I do!

I’ll never forget the day one of my students, Michelle, was having a hard time with her writing assignment. As we started our lesson, I automatically said to Michelle, “You need to do it this way because…”. Her mother overheard me and started laughing and said to Michelle, “I told you she’d explain why.” Later, her mom told me how frustrated she had been and that she had been arguing with her about it. She finally said, “Let’s take it into the Learning Center. You know Bonnie, she’ll explain to you why you need to do it that way.” When our children understand the why of things, they buy into doing them with greater ease.

One More Reason…

The other reason I’m going on about this is that we can actually help our child expedite their movement from unconscious incompetence to unconscious competence by doing a few simple things with our kids on a regular basis.

For instance, we can help them move from working hard at reading to becoming fluent readers with a few minutes a day of reading specific reading drills that work on fluency, tracking, and the rapid retrieval system at the same time. This practice not only improves their reading skills, but also makes doing any reading/writing assignment easier. They will even be able to read the directions for the assignments with ease. And, helping your child with the reading drills provides a little bit of structured one-on-one time per day with your child.

So, when we remember the learning curve (the 4 stages of learning) we help to move our children into that fourth stage faster. The result is less homework wars, kids that learn better time management skills, kids that understand why they are doing their assignments, kids that are more fluent readers so they understand how to do the assignments by reading the directions, and kids that buy into the assignments and do them more readily. So, all in all, it’s a win-win situation.

If you have made the decision to enroll your child in a Toronto private school, you have taken a step towards providing your child with the best possible education. Do Not Focus on Rankings

As you visit schools and look at curriculums, make sure the educational philosophy and values are in line with your goals as a family. If you can, take your children with you and participate in at least part of a normal school day. Consider the Extra-Curriculars

If band is important to you, make sure the school you are considering has this option. For some families a foreign language component is important, but the number of languages you can choose from may be limited if you enrol your children in a small Toronto independent school. Becoming a Nurse - Ten Things They Do Not Tell You

If you are in nursing school or considering it there are a lot of great reasons to become a nurse. Unfortunately, some people have a vested interest in painting a rosy picture of nursing. It like every other job has its benefits and drawbacks. This list is on the negative side to counterbalance some of the propaganda surrounding nursing.

1) Some people like to use the word profession when talking about nursing no matter what you chose to call it, it is a job. It is not a glamorous profession like on TV. You will work hard and feel unappreciated and no matter what management says the bottom line is the most important thing.

2) You will always be in demand. Well, not necessarily. The first place management looks to cut is nursing as it is one of the largest expenditures in the hospital. The economic slow down effects nursing just like every other job. Many hospitals now have hiring freezes. Remember ten new grads are waiting to fill your position at a lower wage.

3) You are on your feet for 12 hours a day. Your feet and back will hurt. Nursing is very physically demanding. Turning a 450 pound patent will take its toll on your back and pray you do not get a rotator cuff injury. To make matters worst your patients can be on opposite ends of the unit with you spending your day running back and forth.

4) Families. A good family can make your day easier. However, they can also make your life a living hell. It takes patience, caring and some legal method of coping with stress to deal with some family members.

5) The bane of all nurses existence, charting. It is very likely you will spend more time charting than providing good patient care. It seems that charting, just becomes more and more complex as time goes by.

6) Unreasonable patient loads. In the state of California there is a law mandating the maximum number of patients a nurse can care for. In every other state you are on your own. This can lead to unsafe workplace environments for you and your patients.

7) Nurses eat there young. There are many good reasonable nurses out there. It only takes one of the other ones to ruin your shift.

You will learn to hate JACHO. They change their name regularly and are currently calling themselves the Joint Commission. They find important problems such as whether the height of your isolation cart is too tall. If you have not heard of the the Joint Commission, you will.

9) You will work weekends, nights and holidays. This may or may not be a big deal for you, but you need to be aware of it.

10) Bladder Control. You will be amazed at how much urine you can hold and how long you can go without relieving yourself.

I know this is negative and I do not want to discourage anyone from becoming a nurse. I am extremely glad I went to nursing school and became a nurse. However, I know people that are unhappy as a nurse and say “It is nothing like what I thought it would be.” I think hearing the negative along with the positive is the best way to make an educated decision about your future.

Storytelling For Children

Children are like sponges, often absorbing lessons from the stories that they hear. These stories can take many forms. Typically, the first stories that children learn are nursery rhymes and later, stories from children’s literature, poems and even songs. These stories are not only entertainment, but also have many other benefits.

Primarily, children intuitively learn lessons about language, speech, grammar and pronunciation when listening to a storyteller. This can lead to increased performance in school as they age. Studies show that children who memorize nursery rhymes and other children’s stories are more likely to become readers as adults, which is linked to intelligence and success in school and in other areas of life.

Additionally, children are able to more easily learn life lessons when they are made relevant through storytelling. Remember the fables of the tortoise and the hare or the boy who cried wolf and other children’s classic stories. These are able to impart valuable lessons on children that they are able to relate to, which is a more effective way of teaching than simply relaying the lesson. For example, if you simply told a child that steadfastness and perseverance were the keys to success, this would have little meaning, but in the context of the story of the tortoise and the hare, the child is able to understand why the tortoise triumphed over the more naturally adept hare.

Also, listening to stories, allows children to place themselves in the position of the characters, teaching them empathy and allowing them to grow into compassionate caring adults. It also gives them a tool for expressing their own experiences, which helps them to emotionally and psychologically process events. Expressing these events through a narrative gives children the tools that they need in order to feel as though their thoughts and feelings are important and valid.

An added benefit of storytelling is that it teaches children listening skills. Listening comprehension is invaluable to a child as he or she begins school, where lessons are often presented as lectures. Also, listening requires patience, another great skill that will contribute to future success.

It has long been common knowledge that reading to children is beneficial in the development of language and other skills, but it is also tiresome at the end of a long day, to sit down with your child and read the same children’s stories over and over. Over the past few years many downfalls has beset college students slowing down the process and even causing a lot of drop outs. President Obama’s stimulus package has promised that college students will not be forgotten with his intentions to help the student as well as the colleges to get back on their feet it is a matter of time before we can really tell what will happen.

College students feel the crunch of our failing economy with the cost of attending school without as much help as they have had in the past. Now that the promise of more grants from the government many students are taking a new interest in some of those careers that are offered by the local community colleges as well as Universities. New students are very interested in finding a career that will last and with the help that is offered they feel that it is possible. Many college students who have felt the crunch in the past now feel that they are on the road to recovery with the aid of the government.

As the economy goes on, it just works in cycle and sooner or later, you’ll find that the banks are willing to lend again, colleges will drop prices and everyone around you will be hiring once again. This is just how our world works. If it makes you feel any better, many experts believe that we will never see a time like this again in our lifetime and it could only happen every few hundred years. As America learns from their mistakes, so do we. The economy will hurt us for now but let’s hope it gets better.
