How to Build a Wind Turbine
January 27, 2009
With society slowly moving towards a cleaner and greener planet, alternative energy is being pushed more and more into the spotlight. Wind power currently comes in second only to natural gas as a renewable source of energy. Last year there was over 1700 megawatts of power product by wind turbines. This year it wind power is expected to account for about 1.5% of the US power needs. Commercial wind farms will account for most of this energy however residential wind turbines are becoming more and more popular and are slowly helping to reduce harmful emissions which tend to pollute our atmosphere; this is why more people want to know how to build a wind turbine.
Wind power is a very clean source of energy, especially when compared to fossil fuel energy which is the main stay in today’s world. Usually the only objection to wind turbines is their so called “visual pollution” and sometimes even the noise that they create. This however is not the case with residential wind turbines. Today’s wind turbines are very compact thanks to technology and they can contribute quite considerably to the overall household energy consumption which in turn saves you money. In fact if you combine it with a solar power unit you could quite easily power your average sized home. While there are household commercial units available, with the advent of the internet there are a number of guides that can easily show you how to build a wind turbine and often at a cost of less than $200.
Some people think that if you are planning on installing a wind turbine at your home that you have to be in an open area so you can get a maximum amount of wind hitting your turbine, this however is not the case as even the smallest amount of breeze can be enough to generate so electricity which will be stored in the battery units. The amount of energy that you can produce is a combination of wind flow and design. Obviously the more wind that the wind turbine is exposed to, the more energy that it can generate and the more energy that can be stored in its batteries. However the traditional windmill design that most people are familiar with isn’t the only design. Roof top mounted wind turbines are comparably small units which do not use the traditional tower as these turbines are designed to be used in relatively sheltered or built up areas where there is not a good wind flow.
If you live out in the country, these units can be fantastic for you especially if you are prone to having power outages and don’t like to use your gasoline generator. The great thing about learning how to build a wind turbine is that you can make more than one turbine for your home which of course means that you will generate more power for your home which in turn means that you will save more money by cutting your power costs.

Educational Toys - Toys That Comes With Extra Advantage
January 27, 2009
The toy industry is a very prosperous ones as children will always want toys to play with and their parents will, more often than not; have to abide by the child’s desire. It is only a norm that children will want toys.
Toys are often developed and enhanced to suit the ever changing needs of their main customer which are of course children. Technology has also helped enhanced toys and today, toys are safer as they are smarter.
In choosing for toys, it is crucial that parents don’t just buy any toy that their children would like to have. A parent should choose toys that would promote the well-being of the child (and this is deemed as responsible parenthood), and there are many toys of this kind that are out in the market. Parents should be keen in buying children’s educational toys so that their sons and daughters wouldn’t grow up to be attached to material things as source of happiness. The choice of toys should be those that would aid in the various aspects involving a child’s growth and development.
You can follow these simple guidelines of buying toys that will aid your children in his or her learning experience:
• Go for toys that cultivates learning and interactions
You should be encouraging your children to play with toys that develop their motor skills. Toys that are able to make them relate to other siblings doll house, tea set and ones that gets the child to build or craft will be the toys that fall into this category. Even toys that can be worn such as fun costumes and party theme hats will stimulate their fantasy or imagination and role play are also good for your children.
• Let your children choose from the variety of choices
When you provide your children with more choices of toys, they will be happy to choose. However, be sure that the kinds of choices you offer are all educational toys. Don’t worry that your child would be bored easily of educational toys because they will be highly engaged to them and entertained as well. There are many types of educational toys such as identify pictures, also those that teach science concepts and arithmetic. After you have identified which are the ones that your child are into, focus on buying those.
Toys that reflect the values presented above are the two below. They are great for nurturing the learning potential of a child :
• Toy musical instruments
Miniature guitars, toy xylophones and pianos, flutes and drums are all toy musical instruments that will provide amazing result for the growth and development of a child. There have been studies conducted that links exposure in early ages to music and music producing to academic excellence in later years especially in math and science.
• Chalkboards
Children loves to draw and scribble. This is why a chalkboard is an ideal toy for them to do just that. Not only will it improve their writing skills and imagination, chalkboard is a good way to introduce to them the alphabet as most would have alphabets and pictures on the top part of the board.
You can have all the good educational toys in the world for your child but it is really your presence and your willingness to spend time with them will make it an enjoyable learning experience for you child.

From Sketches to Snow - A Brief History of Germ Theory
January 27, 2009
While bacteria are not new, humans’ discovery of them was somewhat recent. Who was the first person actually to see bacteria? That was a cloth merchant named Anton van Leeuwenhoek, from Holland. No, he did not have Superman eyes. One day, Leeuwenhoek was improving magnifying lenses, so he could better evaluate a cloth’s weave. For whatever reason, he using one of his outstanding lenses, to examine some drops of pond water. The itty-bitty microbes that Leeuwenhoek saw moving around the water, changed medical history forever.
SMALL CRITTERS MAKE SMALL IMPACT
Throughout the late 1970s, Leeuwenhoek then sent several meticulous sketches to London’s Royal Society. These sketches included smaller organisms with single cells, as well as “larger” types of bacteria.
In retrospect, we would probably assume that Leeuwenhoek’s discovery would quickly revolutionize the world of science and medicine. That never happened. For nearly two centuries, the world at large perceived his finding as fascinating, though irrelevant. Perhaps the problem was that people could not truly value things that seemed to be as significant in their day-to-day lives, as the number of stars in the universe.
SEMMELWEIS AND THE GERM THEORY
Arguably the scientific and medical world did not value Leeuwenhoek’s work, until the link between bacteria and the transfer of diseases, was discovered. However, prior to the development of the Germ Theory of disease, an Austran named Ignaz Semmelweis discovered something significant. He observed that doctors’ failing to wash their hands resulted in more fatalities in a maternity hospital. Although hygienic cheap urbane scrubs were not available yet, Semmelweis suggested that doctors wear different clothes in the hospital, than when they conducted autopsies.
Although Semmelweis’s theory about bacteria impacting the spread of diseases-was correct. His theories were quite unpopular, during his lifetime. In fact, he lost various positions due to them, while the medical world labeled him as insane.
GOT PASTEURIZED MILK?
Though he never lived to see his theories verified, Louis Pastuer and Robert Koch would make Semmelweis a prophet. They provided solid evidence that a link between bacteria and transmittable diseases, indeed existed. This eventually became the “germ theory” Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, when they conducted many important experiments. Pastuer developed pasteurization, which involved boiling to destroy bacteria and lengthen the life of the food. Meanwhile, Koch proved that a type of bacterium caused anthrax, a disease.
THE GERM THEORY AND THE LISTERINE GUY
The works of John Snow was significant in verifying the Germ Theory. He revealed how bacteria could spread after impurities seeped into water that Britons used for drinking and cooking. His work resulted in more sanitary hospitals, and water systems. Meanwhile, Joseph Lister, for whom Listerine is named, created antiseptics to reduce infections during surgeries.
From the discovery of bacteria to understanding the link between bacteria and diseases, the work of several bold researchers, has resulted in a better understanding of the microscope world of bacteria. Today, various techniques, such as the wearing of scrubs, can effectively prevent bacteria from spreading. Germ Theory has become germ fact!
Brent McNutt enjoys talking about cheap urbane scrubs and cheap landau scrubs as well as networking with healthcare professionals online.
There Is Nothing Wrong With Joining The Army
January 27, 2009
I don’t understand why the US Army has a hard time filling its ranks. I understand we are a nation at war, but not all Soldiers deploy. I know Army personnel that has been in the Army for 20 years and have yet to deploy. And yes if your a grunt you will probably deploy more than your counter parts. But what I don;t understand is that in the last big war, we had millions of young Americans lining up to join the Army. Some even lied about there age to join. What happened to that selfless service that this nation use to have? Are we a nation of citizens that thinks as individuals rather than a collective nation. Americans have short memories, and we have forgotten our history. We are very fortunate to never have been invaded, no other nation can lay to that claim. With that being said, I did some research and found out that the Army is offering some great incentives to enlist the aid of the citizens of this nation to carry us as a dominate force into the future.
1st-Money for College or to pay off College Loans: What other nation on this earth offers this type of incentives?
College Loan Repayment
The Army’s College Loan Repayment program allows you to pay off your federally insured student loans when you enlist in the Army in a qualifying job. To be eligible, you must enlist for three years on Active Duty or six years in the Army Reserve, and your loan status must not be in default. For Active Duty Soldiers, you can receive up to $65,000 to repay your college loans. For Army Reserve Soldiers, you can receive up to $20,000 to repay your college loans. The following loans qualify for the Army’s loan repayment program:
• Auxiliary Loan Assistance for Students (ALAS)
• Stafford Student Loan, formerly know as the Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL)
• Parents Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). Must be incurred for the use of the individual contracting for the program (not others such as relatives)
• Consolidated Loan Program. Only covers Soldier’s education expenses
• Federally Insured Student Loans (FISL)
• Perkins Loan, formerly known as the National Direct Student Loan (NDSL)
• Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS)
Army College Fund
The Army College Fund (ACF) is an enlistment incentive option designed to aid in the recruitment of highly qualified soldiers for critical or shortage Military Occupational Specialties (MOS). The ACF supplements the basic Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) entitlement, and awards up to $50,000 in education benefits to those engaged in such critical specialties.
To take advantage of this program, you must enlist for the GI Bill and ACF option. To participate, you must meet MGIB eligibility criteria, have an Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score of 50 or above, be a high school diploma graduate prior to entry on active duty, and enlist for a qualifying military occupational specialty (MOS). Benefits will vary depending on your enlistment term.
Enlistment Bonuses
There are many benefits to joining the Armed Forces, but few directly affect your pay as much as enlistment bonuses. In fact, if you enlist in military you may be eligible for up to $40,000 in cash bonuses.
Army Advantage Fund
The Army gives you the strength to accomplish all your goals as a Soldier, even if that means owning a home. Upon completion of service, qualified Soldiers will be eligible to participate in the Army Advantage Fund. Through the Army Advantage fund you could receive money towards buying a new house or paying off a house already owned.
Depending on the length of your commitment, you could receive:
- $25,000 for an enlistment of three years
-$35,000 for an enlistment of four years
-$40,000 for an enlistment of five plus years
If you joined the Peace Corp-Nothing
If you joined the Work Force-Nothing
If you worked at a fortune 500 Company-It would take years to get these types of offers.
Yes I understand you can get hurt or killed by joining the Army, but look around you can die from many other occupations and from walking across the street. But remember allot of jobs in the Army do not deploy, so when you talk to a recruiter don’t let him or her deter you from your objective of joining and getting the career field you qualify for. There are many more reasons why you should join the army, and I guess my critics can say there are many more reasons not to join. But by serving this nation you can walk with your head high, have stories for your kids and there kids. Learn life long skills, become strong, have a great future, secure your future and your family’s future.
There is no limit to the opportunities in the Army - so there’s no limit to what you can learn and achieve. The Army strengthens you, and your future, with expert training in one of over 150 different jobs for Soldiers on Active Duty. I am a 24 year Army Vet. I have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
I retrieved the information about the benefits from the below listed site.

What Can Parents Do to Ensure a Positive School Experience For Their Children?
January 27, 2009
Being a good parent is a HUGE responsibility. There are so many tasks involved with child rearing and parenting that there’s really no way to be completely prepared. Late nights, diapers, reading “Goodnight Moon” and “Green Eggs & Ham” thousands of times, buying bigger shoes every few months, the list never ends. Parents want their children to grow up to be good, successful adults but it can be difficult to know what to do or how.
Children depend on their parents for everything. It is up to parents, then, to give their children the very best they can: healthy food, clean clothes, good moral lessons and the best education. Good parents work hard to make sure their children are polite, that they know how to tie their shoes and dress themselves. Parents read to their children, helping them learn their letters and numbers and to speak well. All this effort is in preparation for the Big Day when their child will head out into the world and go to school.
The first day of school is a milestone in a child’s (and a parent’s) life. New clothes, a new backpack filled with fresh paper and pencils. That first day is exciting for the whole family. Will the child be happy? Will they make good friends? Will they like their teacher? So many questions, so many unknowns. The truth is, most parents feel they have little or no control over their child’s school experience. They stand at the curb, waving to their child, fervently praying everything will go well.
So, what can parents do to ensure a positive school experience?
Actually, there is a lot they can do. Knowledge is power. The Internet provides a medium in which parents can research all of their school options. There are websites that offer parents access to the various schools in their area and to compare notes with other parents about the focus, philosophy, programs, achievements and challenges faced by each school.
As every parent knows, each child is different. What works for one may not work for another. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to education. Some children need to be nurtured while others need to be challenged. Some children thrive under military school discipline while others would wither and fail. Parents need to ask themselves if their child would do better in a large school or a small school. Does the child have special interests or needs? Only with the answers to questions like these can parents select the best school for their child.
School review sites provide parents with a forum where they can learn about each school’s philosophy of education and any special programs they might offer. School profiles gives parents access to the information needed to make the best choice. How is literacy developed at each school? What physical education and extracurricular activities are offered? Are the school’s teams well organized and successful or are they neglected and under-funded? What clubs are available? What forms of technology being used and taught at each school? Does the school have a traditional approach to teaching or do they use an alternative approach? How does each school promote the fine arts? Do they have a drama club or student chorus? What about transportation and bus service?
School profiles can also be used to view student diversity, school calendars, teacher-student ratios, faculty, student performance data, class sizes, before and after school programs, teacher development programs, academic resources, availability of tutoring programs, administrative leadership, enrollment procedures and fees, class placement and parental involvement opportunities.
Schools can be searched by a variety of criteria including location, type of school and parent ratings. School profiles should include the school’s address and phone number, communities served, homepage information and parent reviews. The best sites offer viewers an opportunity to post their own personal reviews. Each addition to this kind of knowledge base provides parents with the information they need to make an informed decision about where their child will succeed academically.
Each parent knows what works best for their child. School review sites make the information parents need about schools more easily accessible and empower them to make the best decision possible for their child’s education.

Why Should I Stay in School?
January 23, 2009
I have a friend who is teaching at an inner city school in New York City. Many of his students are children from difficult social circumstances and they question whether they will get anything out of being in school. Recently one of the students asked him what use is to it stay in school? From the perspective of a student coming from a rough neighborhood, the question makes a lot of sense. I thought about it and here is how I would answer the question if I were in my friends’ position.
The most important thing you get from a high school (or college) education is that you learn how to think. Whatever you are going to do in life, quick and original and nimble thinking is rewarded. That’s how humanity got to where it is today. The various facts and figures that you will learn in school will be forgotten shortly after you leave. In fact, even if you ask a PhD holder to take an exam shortly after leaving school he would probably fail too.
The “facts” that you learn in world history and world geography will probably even change with time, but if you can develop an ability to solve problems and face new situations and uncover the unknown then this will be an asset for you the rest of your life.
Another lasting benefit of a high school or college education is that you “learn how to learn” and develop a love of learning. Do you think that your learning process ends when you leave school? At age 18 or 22 will you have learned everything you need to know? As someone who is long past 18, I can say that learning can go on for the rest of your life. Magazines, radio, newspapers, TV, the Internet and who knows what information medium of the future all can supply you with a wealth of information. If you get into the habit of tuning into this flood of information and start enjoying the process then you will be learning for the rest of your life. What is “philosophy?” It literally means the love of knowledge and hopefully that is what you will develop by the time you end your formal studies.
One of the most important ingredients for success in life is keeping the company of good people. If you hang out in negative crowd, then you are going to sink to the level of your group. When you are in a formal education setting you can have a lot of good company. It comes in the form of teachers, fellow students and even the great scientists, artists, thinkers and doers of the past whose presence you can enjoy via books, film and recorded media. Hang out a bit with Shakespeare, Aristotle, Galileo, Buddha or Plato and you can’t go wrong.
Hopefully and most importantly, if you stay in a formal education environment you will learn the values that keep us civilized and moving in a positive direction. To be educated is not just a matter of being “smart” but it is a task of becoming “good.” A lot of very intelligent people have hurt humanity greatly. It is not enough to be intelligent, but it is of vital importance to learn what will help humanity and what will hurt it and to always act for the good of all.
These are the main reasons why education is so valuable. Oh yes, I forgot to mention, if you complete your high school or college course you will also get a certificate or credential that will help you to get a job! I mention this last because I am not a big believer in the certificates. It is what you are and what you can do that really matters and if formal education can improve you in these two areas, then you should continue as long as you can.

Mechanic Schools - Are They Worth It?
January 23, 2009
It’s one of the great debates in the automotive world.
Is it worth it to attend an automotive school, or should you just get a job at the local shop and work your way up as you learn?
Well, there is no right or wrong answer. It really depends on what risks you want to take and (like most things in life) how hard you are going to apply yourself to be successful. Let’s take a brief look at both scenarios.
Mechanic Schools
There are a wealth of high-quality mechanic schools in the United States - UTI, WyoTech, Lincoln Tech, and NADC just to name a few. At these schools, you can earn a degree/diploma in just about any facet of the automobile, diesel, motorcycle, marine, auto body and even aviation repair industries. You name it, there is a program for it.
The schools are staffed with professional teachers, equipped with the latest technology and tools, and are committed to helping you succeed, if you put forth the effort and are willing to deal with a few hiccups on the way. In a lot of cases, it’s not just automotive technology training - it’s everyday life training.
By attending, applying yourself to the coursework, and graduating from any of these top schools, you have a very good chance of landing a sweet job right out of school. Possibly even a manufacturer specific job (Audi, BMW, VW, Nissan, etc.) that pull in some pretty big bucks.
Of course, you have to pay tuition, which is not cheap - no question about it. Many students qualify for financial aid to help out, but you are still looking at spending a significant chunk of change to attend most of the top mechanic schools. Looking at it from a different perspective, you are investing in your future, so are you worth it?
Pros:
- you earn a certificate/diploma/degree which shows you can set your mind to a goal and complete it
- you can get highly specialized manufacturer specific training that makes you very valuable in the industry
- you might be able to secure a job right out of school with a specific dealer or manufacturer (see above)
- in some cases you get a good starter set of professional tools
- you make connections with fellow students, teachers, and others in the automotive industry
- you typically get job placement assistance
- many student qualify for financial aid to help pay tuition
- you end up working on vehicles that you worship, and you’re actually happy to wake up in the morning and go to work
Cons:
- you have to pay tuition and possibly student loans after you graduate
- you might not get a job… even with your shiny new diploma in hand
- if you don’t apply yourself 110% in your classes, you might not learn a whole heck of a lot considering how much you paid in tuition (that would be your fault…)
Apprenticeship or Learning on the job
The other road to become a professional mechanic is the tried and true. Learn a good bit tinkering on your own, and then look for an entry level position in a local shop, and work your way up. You can pepper that with by taking a few certification courses along the way, and bingo, you might have yourself a nice career.
Of course, you might also be on the road to changing oil and tires for the rest of your life until you finally get that coveted assistant manager’s position and a $1/hour raise to go with it.
Yeah, that might be a bit too negative, but you get the point.
If you are already good with your hands, own a good set of pro tool, and can find a local shop with a mentor who will teach you the in and outs - then go for it! Get certified here and there over the years to stay current, and you’ll be good to go.
Pros:
- you don’t have to pay tuition
- you might earn an hourly wage while you learn on the job/apprentice
- you might end up taking over for the owner/lead mechanic eventually and run the shop yourself
Cons:
- you might get a very small (or none at all) hourly wage while learning on the job
- the person you are learning from might not know as much as you thought they did..
- you might not learn to do what you really want to be doing (changing tires, oil, etc day in and day out…)
- you have to buy or borrow every last one of your tools yourself
- you might get laid off first since you are the low man on the totem pole
Hopefully this article has given you something to think about. Maybe put things in perspective a bit. Or even made you think of a few things you hadn’t considered. That was the goal.
We need more good, qualified, honest, professional technicians in the industry. Hopefully, whichever road you take, you become one.
Best of luck in your endeavors!

Can You Study Forex If You Are Math Challenged?
January 22, 2009
Causes To Learn Forex
You have to exchange your currency to the local currency if you are in another country. You are actually buying that currency at a particular value. If the US dollar is stronger than the currency, it could double or triple.
In this case, you purchased money with money. This is the idea behind foreign exchange. In trading centers, this is done on a higher degree. To gain more of the currency, you purchase currencies that are weak. When this currency goes stronger against the dollar, you sell it for a profit - immediately!
You have to learn forex and the complex world of global currencies if you’re going into foreign exchange. A forex course will orient you to the fundamentals of foreign exchange, and this can help you arrive at your decisions - that is to say, which currency to buy and sell and when.
You’ll known what calculations and graphs mean and the language with forex training. You will learn that percentage in profits is also called pip.
To Learn Forex is to Understand Forex
Foreign exchange trading attempts to earn money from the trends of world currencies. For example, 1 US dollar today can purchase 70 Euro cents. Tomorrow, your US dollar will purchase the same currency at a different rate. The discrepancy will be minimal, but over a week, this small figure may be considerable.
Learning the fundamentals of forex will let you learn the trends of global currencies and their processes. It’s a good idea to learn forex if you want to do your own speculations and if you want to buy or sell on your own.
How Much Math Do You Require To Do Forex?
In forex, analysis rules. What’s there to analyze? You need to view the interest rates of the country, know trade set-ups, learn the tools that work in forex, be aware of what cause tidal movements of global currencies, and bridge technical and basic analysis.
You’ll learn all these when you learn forex. Depending on yourself, it can be fast, or it’ll take awhile. You don’t need lots of ebooks or pay ridiculous fees to learn forex. To learn the game, you simply need assistance and revolutionary methods.
With the help of software like converters and calculators, the math problem goes away. Everything will fall into place when you learn forex, including your profits.
